* Annual Budget Planning for Profit The annual budget is the foundation of the business plan. It clarifies and defines Ownership's goals and objectives for each account on the income statement and thus provides fiscal direction for key personnel. The annual budget sets out revenue, direct cost, indirect costs and operating expense goals and objectives. Key personnel can thus be held accountable for expected results. A portion of their performance appraisal can and should be based on the annual budget. The completed annual budget is the basis for establishing procedures and cost control.

* Variance Reporting (Pre-requisite: Annual Budget Planning for Profit) The profit and expense control system becomes operational through the use of the budget variance report. This compares actual business results with projections taken from the annual budget. By presenting the difference between the actual and standard amount for each expense, employee and business performance can be measured.

** Introduction to Activity Based Accounting Activity-based costing (ABC) is a cost accounting system that focuses on the various activities performed by a company and collects the attaching costs to produce the products and services. A costing accounting method that focuses on attaching all the costs to produce, perform, distribute and support those products and services.

* Cash-Flow Management The objective of preparing a cash flow projection is to determine deficiencies or excesses in cash, from that which is necessary to operate the business during the time the projection is prepared. If deficiencies are revealed in the cash flow, financial plans must be altered to increase cash by injecting more equity or capital through getting a loan, increasing prices, or reducing expenses.

** Introduction to Business Planning & Strategic Planning Success In any business requires careful planning. Planning contributes most to new business performance. Planning provides a well-thought-out blueprint of action for a business. Careful planning reduces the chances of major mistakes; it also forces the manager to examine the business’s external environment, competition, potential customers, and analyze strengths and weaknesses of these external forces.

** Change Management Principles Plato said, "Change takes place no matter what deters it." Most plans that managers develop require changes. The four types of change are strategy, structure, technology, and people. How your company deals with change can mean the difference between success and failure. This class will teach you to successfully manage change by introducing the factors involved and effectively plan and control the levers of change.

*** Continuous Flow Methodologies (CFM) The Continuous Flow Manufacturing Assessment is for companies looking to implement lean and agile business practices into their operations. The Lean Manufacturing Assessment is 4 days in duration, depending on the size of the company's site operations.

CFM is an approach / methodology analogous to Just-in-Time, Lean production, Demand Flow production, and Continuous Manufacturing Improvement. CFM is a process where a product is produced based on customer orders and not forecasts or plans. Three Common Lean Examples:

  • TAKT time - simulation is a great balancing tool which can take into consideration a wide variety of products and the related processing times, even incorporating appropriate distributions for operator dependent tasks.
  • One piece flow - can be demonstrated and evaluated in terms of lead time, throughput, and inventory. It takes the guess work out of estimating an ROI as well as helping change cultures.
  • Plant layout - offers a subtle opportunity to implement lean cultures by eliminating the possibility of large WIP queues.

This process requires more employee involvement. The goal is to arrange the work area where related operations are located immediately adjacent to each other, where the material moves continuously and at a uniform rate through a series of balanced operations. This permits simultaneous performance throughout, and the work moves toward completion eliminating partial or incomplete work.

*** Kanban & JIT Techniques The key to understanding systems such as JIT and KANBAN is to be able to look past the complexities, to look past the applications in any industry, and to look past the cultural differences. We need to learn the basics of what JIT and KANBAN try to achieve. Learn what the basic values and objectives are and you will find that the real magic of JIT and KANBAN is their simplicity. These tools are of tremendous value because they force attention to be focused on the performance of the core functions of an activity. In any activity, regardless of the industry you are in or the function you perform, the fundamental focus of JIT and KANBAN can apply to your operation and allow you to excel to unprecedented levels. We have combined these two processes and distilled from them ten basic activities that, if followed, are certain to lead toward the highest level of performance achieved wherever applied. These steps will be covered in the training class.

*** TQM Principles We believe that the super highway to global competitiveness and profitability is Total Quality. Not Total Quality as usual, but the new and more effective Quality improvement approach by six “Back to Basics” elements: 1). Results-driven, 2). Train the employees the skills to analyze and correct problems, 3). Increased knowledge base. Remove the blinders and avoid the “Sharper Stick Syndrome.” 4). Empower employees, 5). Eliminate the “Silo Effect” from the business, and 6). Shift old paradigms.

* Problem Solving Techniques Problems exposed are candidates for analysis, using basic problem solving techniques. The Problem Solving tools include Brainstorming, Pareto Analysis, Cause and Effect diagram, and various Quality Control tools. This training class will introduce the attendees to a Problem Solving Process and solve recurrence of present problems.

* Process Flow Charting Process charts provide a systematic description of a process or work cycle, with sufficient detail for analysis to develop methods improvements. Each member of the process chart family is designed to assist the analyst clearly visualize the present procedure. A standardized format provides a common language so that several people can visualize problems together. Most charts combine written, graphic, and pictorial visualization, which promotes full participation by everyone concerned. This stimulates an exchange of ideas. Finally the charts are excellent tools for presentation of proposals for improved methods to all levels of management. The attendees will be introduced to several of these charts and hands-on developing a Process Flow Diagram.
